Core Classes
- Academic Writing
Grammar, essay writing, research paper writing, working with library sources, documentation, academic vocabulary, and understanding academic texts. - Critical Reading & Analysis
Critical thinking and reading of academic texts and research articles, as well as reading and discussing literature. - Listening, Speaking & Presenting
Classroom discussions, conversations, debates, academic presentations, and notetaking.
Elective Classes
- American Culture and Test Preparation
During an 8-week session, you will choose four elective classes: two classes for the first 4 weeks, and another two classes for the last 4 weeks. These classes will help you understand English usage in a variety of settings. Some classes have field trips. Examples of classes include:
- TOEFL or IELTS Test Preparation
- American English Pronunciation
- Academic Vocabulary
- Idioms for Effective Communication
- American Slang
- English through Popular Music
- Storytelling Through Comics
- Content Studies (Your Choice)
You will be able to customize the IEP to your area of interest. These classes will review vocabulary and concepts in a specific subject to help you prepare for your future major. You will do some of the work in an on-demand class online and you will participate in a discussion group in-person. Choose one of these subjects:
- Cinema
- Engineering
- Finance
- Humanities
- Music Theory
Conversation Swap
You’re invited! This social event is held every week for IEP and CSUN students to practice conversational English and share their own native languages.
Tutoring
You can sign up for free, one-on-one tutoring appointments for help with understanding homework assignments, writing, research, critical reading, test-taking strategies, pronunciation and communication skills. Tutoring appointments are offered every afternoon, Monday through Friday.
